Build Passive Income with Canva Templates in 2023

Did you know that the easiest digital product to get started selling is a digital template?

That's why that is the first digital product that I ever got started with nine years ago.

And I am still successfully selling digital templates to this day.

So today, I want to go over what exactly digital templates are and what you can do step by step today to start successfully selling your own digital templates online for passive income.

What are digital templates?

Essentially, a digital template is just a file created using some kind of software. It's like a pattern that allows other people to create something out of it.

Examples of software would be Canva, Photoshop, and InDesign.

I know you can also make Notion templates, and Asana templates. Any software that allows you to templatize the thing, you can create a template for that.

And the cool thing is you don't need to be a designer or have a design background to create these templates.

For example, software like Canva, actually already has templates for you.

Use the Canva template as a starting point. Make it into whatever you want. So maybe you'll change the colors, you'll change the text, you'll change the fonts, and maybe you'll make several different types of designs, and then you'll put those for sale.

But you're not selling the actual Canva templates.

That would be wrong! You're just using it as a starting point if you're not a designer yourself.

How can you come up with an idea for your digital templates to sell?

To come up with your digital template idea, answer these questions:

-Who is your ideal client?

-Who do you want to create a digital template for?

-Who do you want to help?

Here’s how I come up with my own digital templates to sell:

We already created different designs and scripts and things for my business, so I thought I could just put those for sale.

Then, I was thinking that people who do what I do, who have an online digital products business or a business offering online courses, are probably going to want these templates to save them time and money on hiring a designer. So that's kind of like my ideal client and the problem I'm trying to solve.

You can also think the same.

For example, one of my friends, she's good at Asana. So what she'll do is she'll actually package up her Asana templates so that other people can load them into their Asana account and already have an entire project plan for something. Like maybe a launch, goals for the next year, or maybe it's like a goal planning board.

So just think about how are you going to help that person you have in mind and what's going to save them time and money.

How to design these templates?

As I said, you can use different software. It just depends on what sort of template you're making.

You could make a budget template in just a spreadsheet or similar tool. It is really up to you and what template you have in mind.

For me, I mostly use Canva. Thus, I’ve created a click-by-click tutorial on how you could make a template in Canva. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/zcfWJSysUaQ?t=229

Let’s say, you already created a nice template in Canva and you would like to sell it now.

On the upper corner of the design, simply click the “Share Button”, click on “Template Link”, then “Copy”.

This is a sample of the link that you would give to people that purchased the templates.

When people fill out your order form, you’ll send them an email that has the link to the template.

And when they click the link, it will look like this:

They can just click “Use template”.

And the templates will be added instantly to their own Canva accounts, allowing them to easily edit those templates and start using them.

How are you going to sell these digital templates?

To sell your digital templates, you need a checkout page.

The checkout page includes information about the actual templates, and a space for customers to input their name, email, and payment information to complete the order.

Once it has been submitted, it’ll automatically email them the link to those templates.

With checkout pages, you can sell templates passively and continuously.

No matter if you're sleeping or you're traveling or you're hiking or whatever it is you're doing. If somebody purchases, then, they're just automatically going to get the link and you don't have to manually do it.

There are different software that you can use to create checkout pages. You could look at Systeme.io.

How do I actually get people to go to that page and get them interested to put in their payment information?

So there are several different ways to do this, and I like to call these funnels.

A funnel is essentially just a series of web pages or a series of steps to guide your ideal client to the actual purchase.

Here’s what it looks like:

So one of the funnels that I have been doing a lot lately is a social media funnel.

So what I do is I'm just consistently creating content on TikTok and Reels. Then, I’ll put the actual template link on every caption of each Tiktok and Reel.

A lot of times naturally, people will just go to my account, and when they click the link in bio, I'll have a link to the actual template checkout page.

It’s working and it’s a good strategy for me.

Simply put, you provide free valuable content to your audiences, and you lead them to take action, to click the link in bio to hopefully make a purchase.

So that's sort of the steps there. But you can sell the templates in a lot of different ways.

The main thing is you just have to have traffic and the checkout page and then deliver the templates automatically.

So as far as traffic goes, I already said you could use social media, but you could also use something like an Email List or YouTube, or a Podcast.

Final Thoughts

All I can say is you can definitely make money with Canva templates and it’s that just simple.

I hope what I shared today will be very helpful to you and give you some new ideas!
